What is Wordshark?

(The successor to Wordshark 2L)

Wordshark is a major teaching resource used widely in schools. It combines the excitement of computer games with the serious task of learning to read and spell. It offers 26 different games which use sound, graphics and text to teach, and reinforce word recognition and spelling. It is designed for Keystage 1 -3, ie early literacy to 13 years or so, although older people also use it.

The games and the selection of pre-recorded words have been specially targeted to assist those with specific learning difficulties/dyslexia. The variety of games, concepts and words make Wordshark suitable for use in both primary and secondary schools as well as at home.

The games:

  • 26 totally different games providing high motivation and interest;
  • Each game designed to help with one or more aspects of reading and spelling;
  • Variable levels and speeds for each game to meet all grades of skill;
  • Scores and timings displayed on screen at all times but with no final time limits;
  • Competitive play between two or more pupils is possible in some games;
  • Games provide good training in mouse and keyboard skills;
  • Help screens throughout.
The words:
  • About 5,000 selected words pre-recorded (not synthesised);
  • Version 3 includes another 350 word lists to cover the National Literacy Strategy, giving a total of about 500.
  • Words grouped in a structured sequence to reinforce the learning process;
  • Flexibility to select any word list;
  • Contextual use of words provided in sentences and puzzles;
  • Pupils can work independently on pre-selected word lists;
  • Choice of words based on all 3 stages of the book 'Alpha to Omega' (by Dr Bevé Hornsby and Frula Shear);
  • Facility to record your own word lists;
  • Easy to follow manual including all word lists and teaching notes.

What Do You Need?

PC compatible with soundcard. To install the CD onto a hard disk needs 40MB free, to run from CD-ROM  needs 1MB. Network version allows user records in different directories.
